Read-Across

At a glance: Using data from similar chemicals to predict an untested chemical’s properties.

Read-across uses relevant information from analogous (“source”) substances to predict properties for the “target” substance. 3 It is one of the most commonly used alternative approaches for data-gap filling under REACH. 3 Structural similarity alone is not enough: a read-across proposal must be adequately justified for each endpoint; a reference to structural similarity is often insufficient. 4 It sits alongside QSAR as a non-animal, structure-based way to fill data gaps.
