BMD (Benchmark Dose)

At a glance: A modeled dose producing a defined small change in biological response.

The Benchmark Dose is estimated from a fitted dose–response curve and is associated with a specified change in response relative to the background, called the benchmark response or BMR. The approach can be applied to all toxicological effects and uses all dose–response data. 49 The BMDL is the lower bound of the Benchmark Dose confidence or credible interval and is normally used as the reference point. 49 Because it uses the full curve, the Benchmark Dose conveys more information than a NOAEL 50 and is the preferred basis for a Point of Departure.
