SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern)
At a glance: A REACH designation for substances with especially serious hazards.
Under REACH Article 57, SVHCs are substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction; persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic; very persistent and very bioaccumulative; endocrine disruptors; or substances that raise an equivalent level of concern on a case-by-case basis. 53 Mutagen and CLP explain two concepts relevant to the CMR criteria. Once identified, an SVHC is added to the Candidate List for possible eventual inclusion in the Authorisation List, and identification is based on the substance’s hazard properties. 54
