ATSDR develops toxicological profiles—comprehensive summaries and interpretations of toxicological and epidemiological information—and derives Minimal Risk Levels, or MRLs. An MRL estimates daily human exposure to a hazardous substance that is likely to be without appreciable risk of adverse noncancer effects over a specified duration. MRLs cover acute (1–14 days), intermediate (15–364 days), and chronic (365 or more days) exposure and are based on noncancer effects only. 41 Like other reference values, MRLs are derived from a Point of Departure.
